Mexology Fest 2024: Honoring Life in its Second Edition
From October 31st to November 2nd, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit hosted the second edition of Mexology Fest, a celebration of creative mixology focusing on Mexican spirits. Discover the most memorable moments and surprises that made this year’s event extraordinary.
Day 1: Welcome
The celebration of life’s eternal cycle began on Thursday, October 31st, with a stunning setup at the resort’s Ocean Garden. Guests were greeted with lively mariachi music and escorted to their seats to enjoy a festive dinner. Saeed “Hawk” House, the festival’s ambassador, welcomed everyone with his signature cocktail, Qué bello es vivir. Amid a lively and joyful atmosphere, the event was officially inaugurated, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening.
Michelin-starred Chef Bruno Oteiza of Cocina de Autor curated an exquisite five-course menu featuring top-quality ingredients and innovative flavors. As guests savored this culinary journey, they were treated to breathtaking acrobatic performances accompanied by live mariachi music, adding a magical touch to the night.
The evening concluded at Koi Bar, where Campari took over. There, they presented iconic cocktails in an ambiance of sophistication and celebration.
Day 2: Field Trip to Tequila
On Friday morning, November 1st, attendees embarked on a journey to Tequila, Jalisco—the heart of Mexico’s most iconic spirit. Hosted by Tequila Tres Mujeres, guests explored the fascinating production process, from agave planting to underground barrel aging. Each guest planted their own agave, creating a meaningful and lasting memory of the experience.
That evening, the festivities continued at Koi Bar, where renowned mixologist Mike Capoferri, owner of Thunderbolt in Los Angeles, dazzled the crowd with three innovative cocktails: Barcelonnette, La Frutera, and Paloma Rosa. Using tequila, mezcal, and raicilla as the bases, Capoferri showcased the unique flavors of these Mexican spirits in each creation.
Day 3: Experiences for All
The final day of Mexology Fest, Saturday, November 2nd, was filled with one-of-a-kind experiences. The day began with Piel de Agave, a multisensory wellness session by SE Spa experts. Guests practiced facial yoga, enjoyed sound therapy, and experienced agave-based treatments. The session concluded with a healthy agave shot and a symbolic ojo de venado keepsake.
Later, on the Azul restaurant terrace, mixologist Christine Wayne inspired attendees with her life story before guiding them through the creation of their own mocktails, adding a personal touch to each drink.
In the afternoon, Koi Bar transformed into a hub of learning and tasting, featuring a presentation by renowned bartender Lucas Assis. He delved into the history and mythology of agave, its cultural significance, and the unique characteristics of tequila, mezcal, and raicilla.
The day culminated in a mystical cocktail-making experience led by Sergio Villarreal. In a dimly lit setting, guests crafted cocktails using creative ingredients like activated charcoal, chili-coated gummies, and beet powder.
A Toast to Death
The grand finale occurred at the resort’s Main Garden, where seven mixology stands offered exclusive cocktails crafted by each mixologist. Chef Guillaume Morancé and Chef Bruno Oteiza delighted attendees with seafood-inspired hors d’oeuvres while live music set the perfect backdrop for the evening.
This second edition of Mexology Fest was a vibrant celebration of knowledge, tradition, innovation, and mysticism. The rich colors of Día de Muertos adorned every detail, and the homage to life’s eternal cycle was evident in every sip.
