7 Must-do’s in Los Cabos you’ll love
Only a few destinations can compare to the beauty of Los Cabos. Spectacular weather all year long, together with stunning natural settings, are only a few of the wonders that make this paradise a dream for travelers who visit. Whether you are planning a trip with family or friends, a romantic getaway, or you are wandering this stretch of land on your own, this destination will remain on your favorites list forever.
Shockingly amazing contrasts between mountains, arid deserts, and the sea create simply fascinating landscapes, and it is exactly this diversity that prepares the terrain to enjoy as many activities as you can imagine. Let’s take a look!
Out of the 14 species of whales in the world, 6 inhabit Mexican waters permanently. The humpback whale and the gray whale only visit these latitudes in the breeding season, so it’s very common to spot them, but don’t be surprised to see blue whales, sperm whales, and even killer whales swimming the Sea of Cortez.
Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are visited by these majestic cetaceans between December and until mid-April, for visitors and locals’ delight.
Land’s End Arch
More than 750 miles cross the Baja California peninsula from point to point to find the end in this incredible eroded rock formation, carved by the sea into an immense arch. It has been adopted by the destination as an iconic landmark. Here, the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific are united for the very first time. Water taxis make the journey to this spectacular attraction, and you can choose a glass bottom lancha to observe underwater life on your way. Be sure to admire the natural sculptures the locals named: Pelican Rock and Neptune’s Finger, among many others.
And now you are at The Arch, don’t miss:
Lovers Beach or Playa del Amor
This small but charming beach is located north of the Arch. The uniqueness of being bathed by two seas deserves a place on your list. The gentle waves the beach receives from the Sea of Cortez are in contrast with the breaking, irruptive waves coming from the Pacific —curiously enough, this side of Lovers Beach is known as Divorce Beach.
Underwater Sand Falls
Just beneath the Playa del Amor lie the Sand Falls; if you are an experienced diver, you cannot afford to miss them on your next visit. This natural phenomenon is caused by the friction between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates and by the contrast between the temperatures of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.
You have to dive more than 30 meters deep to encounter this magnificence of nature. During the immersion, you are sure to be accompanied by colorful marine species.
Since the 1960s, the Baja California peninsula began to figure on the sports scene thanks to the world’s longest off-road race, known as the Baja 1000, which runs just over 1,050 miles between the port cities of Ensenada and La Paz. If you want to get the most out of adrenaline in a Baja 1000-style off-road race —without racing all the miles—, you can find everything from ATV desert excursions to high-speed tours.
You would not imagine the marine diversity that inhabits the Cabo Pulmo reef if you did not see it with your own eyes. The experience of diving or snorkeling in this protected area of more than 17,300 acres is simply an exciting adventure. It is also a great success story: All you can admire today is due to this fishing village community’s decision to restrict its primary commercial activity since 1995, allowing the reef to restore itself from excessive fishing.
Charming from every perspective, Todos Santos must be on the list of places to visit when you travel to this area. It is located between the arid desert of Baja California, the Sierra de la Laguna, and the Mexican Pacific and stands out for its artistic and cultural atmosphere. Take a tour of the gallery to admire the works of local and world artists, or plan a day at the beach to sample delicacies from the sea, surf at Playa Cerritos, or simply sunbathe in Palm Beach.
