3 reasons to celebrate Sunscreen Day!
We are eager to come out and spend hours basking in the sun! Nevertheless, it is important to remember that even when only 5% of solar radiation is ultraviolet (UVB and UVA), these rays are very powerful and can cause several damages to our skin. So much so that in the United States they celebrate the National Sunscreen Day, aka “Don’t Fry Day!” on May 27th.
A sunblock acts as a screen that prevents these harmful radiations from penetrating our skin, causing severe damage, sometimes irreversible.
But… sun protection is not limited to the outdoors
Health professionals recommend that in these times when many of us are working from home, we do not stop the use of sunscreen.
According to Dr. Laura Scott, from the University of Miami and a doctor at Dr. Philip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, “Windows only protect us from UVB rays, which are the burning rays of the sun, but not UVA, the aging rays.”
This range of ultraviolet spectrum (UVA), unlike UVB rays, are painless but can penetrate into the deep layers of the skin down to the dermis causing free radicals.
Being exposed to a window can damage our skin in just 15 minutes; more than 50% of UVA radiation passes through the glass. If you work in a room where the sun enters most part of the day, you should be using a sunscreen with a minimum factor of SPF 30 to prevent skin conditions.
3 reasons to celebrate Sunscreen Day:
1. Protects your skin
Sunscreen is a great ally in preventing side effects from exposure to ultraviolet rays, such as:
- Melasma or facial spots
- Sun allergies such as redness or rashes
- Skin cancer
This is a good time to start up the good habits, even from home.
2. Prevents premature aging
Using sunscreen prevents the appearance of spots or blemishes, reduces the visibility of little red veins, and stops premature wrinkles to show up due to photoaging.
3. Offers cosmetic options
In addition to the properties listed above, some protectors give your skin a healthier and glowing look. You can find them with extra moisturizing effects, hypoallergenic, recommended for sensitive skins, and even with pigments to use as a makeup base.
Only 3, but powerful, reasons to consider using them!
